West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee has declared that her party will fight all three rival political forces alone in next year’s Lok Sabha elections, following the party’s defeat in the Sagardighi bypoll in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district to the Congress. Banerjee accused the Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and Communist Party of India (Marxist) of playing the “communal card” and said that the result exposed their “unholy alliance.” She added that her party cannot go with parties that are with the BJP and that the TMC’s alliance will be with the people. Banerjee also commented on the TMC’s loss in the Meghalaya election and Tripura, where the party failed to open its account, while the BJP crossed the majority mark. The CPI(M) and Congress, which fought the Tripura polls together, bagged a combined count of 14 seats. Banerjee had previously called for opposition unity to fight the BJP in next year’s Lok Sabha polls. She also hailed the direction of the Constitution bench of the Supreme Court to constitute a panel comprising the Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition, and the Chief Justice of India to select chief election commissioners.
