KOLHAPUR: NCP chief Sharad Pawar on Tuesday said citizens would have praised Narendra Modi had he observed a fast to eradicate poverty, referring to the PM beginning an 11-day fast on January 12 to prepare for the Ram temple’s consecration ceremony.

“I respect his devotion, but people would have praised him more had he observed a fast to eradicate poverty. Attempts are being made to divert attention from the real issues. We should be alert and keep bringing up the real issues we are all facing,” he said in Nipani town of Belagavi district in Karnataka.

He said BJP and RSS have started politics in the name of Lord Ram. “Lord Ram’s devotees from across the country contributed to the construction of the temple. Now, the Ram bhakts are being ignored and BJP and RSS have started politicking.”
