Ahead of the 75th Republic Day, President Droupadi Murmu has given approval for 277 gallantry awards. Notably, 119 recipients hail from Left Wing Extremism affected areas, 133 from Jammu & Kashmir, and 25 from other regions, recognizing their valorous acts.
The distribution of these awards includes 275 medals granted to individuals from various regions and police forces, such as J&K Police, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Delhi, CRPF, and SSB. Additionally, two Police Medals for Gallantry (PMG) were awarded to BSF personnel for their exceptional contribution to peacekeeping in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Originating on January 26, 1950, with the institution of Param Vir Chakra, Maha Vir Chakra, and Vir Chakra, the gallantry awards evolved over the years. In 1952, three more awards—Ashoka Chakra Class-I, Ashoka Chakra Class-II, and Ashoka Chakra Class-III—were introduced, later renamed Ashoka Chakra, Kirti Chakra, and Shaurya Chakra in 1967.
These prestigious honors are announced biannually, coinciding with Republic Day and Independence Day.”
