In a recent development, Air India has come under scrutiny as the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) imposes a hefty ₹1.10 crore fine for safety violations on critical long-range routes. This penalty follows a comprehensive investigation initiated after a former Air India pilot, serving as a B777 commander, lodged a complaint with the civil aviation ministry and DGCA on October 29 of the previous year.
The DGCA’s thorough examination prima facie revealed non-compliance by the airline, prompting the issuance of a Show Cause Notice to the Accountable Manager of Air India Limited. The airline’s response to this notice was meticulously evaluated concerning statutory provisions and performance limits outlined by the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM).
This significant fine is part of a series of actions taken by aviation regulatory bodies to address flight irregularities and reinforce safety standards. Notably, IndiGo also faced a substantial ₹1.20 crore fine recently, stemming from a unique incident where passengers exited onto the tarmac and began eating food.
Civil aviation minister Jyotiraditya Scindia expressed strong disapproval of such incidents, deeming them unacceptable. The minister emphasized the need for stringent compliance within the aviation sector to ensure passenger safety and uphold industry standards.
These penalties come amid challenges faced by airlines due to unforeseen circumstances like adverse weather conditions.
