In a bizarre incident, a 38-year-old man chopped off his tongue at Kada Dham temple in Kaushambi district on Saturday morning and offered it to the presiding deity after his wish was fulfilled, police said. The devotee, identified as Sampat Saroj of Purav Sarira village, was admitted to government hospital in Manjhanpur where his condition is said to be stable.
Station house officer of Kada Dham police station Abhilash Tiwari told TOI: “Sampat along with his wife Ban Pati arrived at Maa Sheetla Dham temple on Saturday morning to offer prayers. The couple first took holy dip in Ganga and then offered prayers and performed parikrama (circumambulation). In the meantime, Sampat took out a blade and cut his tongue before the goddess. The act left other devotees as well as his wife stunned.”Upon being alerted, police rushed to the spot and took profusely bleeding Sampat to hospital. His wife told reporters: “My husband had on Friday night wished to offer prayers at Kada Dham temple and as per plan we arrived at the temple on Saturday morning. However, I had no idea about my husband’s act.”
She also claimed that her husband is a devout man and fasts twice a year during Navratri and Chaitra Navratri.
